There are many things to consider before you start your hunt for digital HDMI cables. When it comes to wire gauge, the standard is known as American Wire Gauge (AWG). The most commonly available gauges in HDMI cables are 28AWG, 24AWG and 22AWG. Contrary to what you might believe, the 22AWG is the thickest, the 28AWG the thinnest.

In a nutshell, the longer cable you need, the thicker wire gauge you should get. A six feet cable will do with a 28AWG. But a 20 foot cable will require at least a 24AWG if not the 22AWG. This is important to maintain a strong signal throughout the cable.

When it comes to buying a HDMI cable, many people go right over the top and try and get the most expensive one available, thinking that it will dramatically improve the quality of their picture. This is false, however, as the difference in quality between the most expensive cables, and the cheapest cables is hardly noticeable. Just stick to following the above rule about wire gauge and length, and you’ll do fine with one of the cheaper cables.
